A lecture entitled “A High Caliber Education: Gun Rights, Gun Violence, and College Campuses” will be presented by the Future Professoriate Program on Friday, February 26 from 2:00-3:30 p.m. in the Peter Graham Scholarly Commons in Bird Library.
With nine dead at Umpqua Community College in Oregon and an escalating incidence of gun violence on and around college campuses, higher education finds itself—again—at the center of the national debate around guns.
- the mass shooting phenomenon
- “Campus Carry” laws sweep the states
- American gun culture and election-year politics
- academic freedom and the armed campus
Featured speaker Steven Goode, Professor of Law at the University of Texas at Austin, will discuss his experience as chair of the UT-Austin Campus Carry Policy Working Group, in dialogue with Jaclyn Schildkraut, Professor of Public Justice at SUNY Oswego and author of the forthcoming Mass Shootings: Media, Myths, and Realities.
