Anna Laganà from The Getty Conservation Institute will be speaking on “Which Plastics are in my collection? The Identification of Plastics without the use of analytical techniques.”

Determining the specific plastic used in an object is fundamental to properly approaching its preservation, understanding its degradation and defining appropriate conservation treatments. Participants in this workshop will gain a basic introduction to plastics (classification, history, manufacturing, degradation), learn ways to differentiate and recognize the most common plastics found within museum and archival collections, and improve their examination skills when looking at objects made with these materials. Non-analytical identification techniques will be tested on a selection of plastic objects from the Special Collections Research Center’s Plastics Artifact Collection.

Due to limited space available for the workshop, please RSVP to If you need an accommodation in order to fully participate in this event, please contact at least one week prior to the event.
